ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A civilian activist in the southern Iraqi city of Amarah survived an assassination attempt on Thursday after unidentified gunmen opened fire on his car. According to local sources, the attack was in retaliation to protesters' burning of the local headquarters of an Iran-backed militia blamed for killing two others earlier in the week.

“Raza al-Eqeely, a student sit-in protest coordinator in Maysan province, survived an assassination attempt unharmed. He was shot at seven times while riding his car in the city of Amarah,” said one source.

The incident comes the day after angry demonstrators set fire to the Amarah headquarters of Asaib Ahl al-Haq, a militia in Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) with strong ties to Tehran. The incident appeared to be in response to Tuesday's assassination of two activists participating in ongoing national protests.

According to a security source, “Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the activists in the protests, Abdul Quddus Qasim and local lawyer Karar Adel, near the industrial zone in the city of Amara, the center of the province.”

The incidents come amid ongoing national unrest as anti-government protesters who first took to the streets in early October continue to demand the expulsion of what they say is a chronically corrupt political elite that has dominated successive Iraqi governments at the expense of the population.

Since the demonstrations began in Baghdad and quickly spread to multiple other cities, Iraqi security forces and Iranian-backed militias of the PMF have killed over 600 protesters, according to official statistics

The Iraqi government has repeatedly pledged to find and prosecute those responsible for the killings of protesters and assassinations of activists, but so far without meaningful results.
